Even if you have never visited the country of Australia, you probably have heard of Vegemite. It is not a meal in and of itself, but rather an inexplicably thick spread that is incorporated into various different dishes. Moreover, it is a staple product of this region that is universally adored. A majority of the time, Vegemite is sparingly supplemented onto a piece of toast with a coating of butter. However, it is also commonly used in spaghetti, avocado toast, beef stews, soup, and on grilled cheese and toast-- which is supposedly a life-changing combination. Vegemite does contain a high level of sodium and is created with brewer’s yeast extract; hence, that is why Vegemite has a darkish brown hue, and why this delectable treat is referred to as “salty and malty”. If you are ever in Australia, make sure you try this as it may be life-altering.

Another necessary food item to include are meat pies, which are miniature pies comprised of minced meat and gravy, served with tomato sauce and occasionally mushrooms, onions, and cheese; generally, this is consumed as a takeout item sold in fast-food chains and restaurants. Furthermore, it is iconic to both New Zealand and Australia, and it continues to be referred to as the “latter’s national dish”. One brand in Australia that manufactures these meat pies produce an average of 50,000 meat pies per hour, and an average of twelve meat pies are consumed by every individual residing in this country. Thus, if you ever find yourself in Australia, this crucial aspect of Australia’s food culture is worth trying also.
