Surfing has a long history in South America dating back thousands of years! South America has a lot of beautiful beaches and the perfect waves to surf! Most countries in South America have many world-renowned surf spots. These spots vary depending on the level of difficulty that the surfer desires. For expert surfers, Pico Alto, Peru has the largest wave found in South America. A nice spot for beginners is Montañita, Ecuador, which is actually referred to as the surfing capital. Deciding the best time of the year to visit a specific surf spot is difficult because it varies much on location. Different countries and beaches are better to visit during various times of the year. According to the World Surf League’s website:four of the current top five international surfers are from Brazil. Their names are Jadson Andre, Yago Dora, Alex Ribeiro, and Miguel Pupo. Many of their competitions take place in South America, but primarily in Brazil.
