Unspoken Traditions

Africa has always been described as a beautiful place because of the savannas, sights, and animals. However, Africa has many cultural traditions that many people might not be aware of. Some of these traditions are: kidnapping your bride, khweta Ceremony, putting a price on the bride, spitting your blessings, The groom wears a veil, and many more.

It is fascinating to explore other traditions and cultural backgrounds. Africa should be explored more as some of these traditions are intensely interesting. However, some of these traditions are thought to be brutal and unnecessary. It is something that has been practiced and because of these traditions, the tribes have stayed alive for so long.

Some of these traditions, as extreme as they seem , are what distinguishes some tribes from others-- hence forth they’re necessary. Lip stretching begins when a young girl has reached teenage maturity; they begin by removing her bottom teeth and add a plate that stretches annually. This signifies she has matured and is ready for womanhood. Kidnapping the bride consists of the groom or suitor asking the father permission to marry the bride. If approved the suitor receives a beating from the bride’s father, and if denied-- the groom must kidnap the bride. Although these traditions may seem extreme, these traditions have been practiced for decades and are interesting for outsiders to learn and respect.
